Just when we thought we didn’t need any more reasons to love Coca-Cola—we discovered the bubbly and refreshing beverage also pulls double duty as a cleaning agent. This polar bear approved soft drink and “Share a Coke” snack companion commercialized around the globe is not just good for gulping down at the movie theatre with a bucket of popcorn. No, you can actually get more mileage out of a six pack of Coca-Cola by using it to clean your toilet.
We can’t speak for everyone but we are fairly certain that the bathroom is the hardest room in a home to clean and the least favorite of all, the toilet. Do you share a bathroom with your husband or young boys? If the answer is yes, then you know keeping the toilet spotless is a big challenge. Instead of purchasing chemical filled abrasive toilet bowl cleaners or those expensive fizzies, head to the fridge and grab a can or bottle of Coke!
Sit back and let the carbonation of Coke work its magic on those gross brown rings, lime buildup, and water stains. The carbonic, citric, and phosphoric acids in Coca-Cola make it great for dissolving rust and fighting those tough stains. We are going to teach you how to use this fan favorite beverage to get your porcelain throne to sparkle!
Step 1: Pour Coca-Cola along the edges of the toilet bowl and leave overnight.
Step 2: In the morning, flush and give it a whirl.
It couldn’t get any easier than that! Want to see it done? Check out this video by The Today Show. We don’t recommend using Coke every time your toilet needs a cleaning, but it works great if you are without a toilet bowl cleaner or looking for a fun way to clean with kids. Keep in mind that Coca-Cola is dark in color which could actually stain the bowl and leave a sugary residue if used excessively. To avoid the risk of tinting your toilet with Coke, a carbonated soft drink like Sprite or tonic water will also do the trick. The key is to let whatever liquid mixture you choose to sit overnight in the toilet.
Not willing to spare a Coke but need to clean the toilet quickly? We have another natural concoction for you with items typically found right in your kitchen. Combine equal parts baking soda and white vinegar, add a few drops of essential oils (we recommend peppermint or eucalyptus) and you have yourself a homemade cleaner. This combo will not only clean the bowl but neutralize any off-putting odors.
