2020 was a year that allowed us to reevaluate how we spend our time and the importance our home plays in our daily lives. Fundamentally, the way we live in our homes has changed over the past year, but 2021 will be the year where we let inspiration into our homes with a new perspective. With a deeper appreciation for the role our home plays in our daily lives, it's only fitting that we observe the top colors and materials for homes in 2021 that make us feel the most comfortable.
You may have seen some of these styles before as they have been a trend in recent years in terms of interior decor but with each year brings new color, textures, and styles. Ultimately the goal is to create a simple, cozy space that really makes you feel at home without getting too complicated.
This color is the perfect combination of cozy and chic creating a comforting space that you will be confident in. “Urbane Bronze encourages you to create a sanctuary space for mindful reflection and renewal,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “Complement the simplicity of Urbane Bronze with natural materials — like wood finishes, organic stone accents or woven textiles — and a variety of mixed metals to create a serene space grounded in nature,” Sue recommends.
The warm earthy hues of Canyon Dusk pairs well with creamy whites and nature-inspired textures. "There is something so reassuring about dusk, the moment just after sunset, which brings the promise of a new day," said Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr, in a press release. "The illuminating, free-spirited Canyon Dusk is a color that can be found in a variety of places, from an awe-inspiring desert landscape to the color of sunbaked clay. Wherever it is found, we share a collective need for these moments of comfort and inspiration in the days ahead."
Pantone put a twist on this year's color of the year announcement by choosing two contrasting shades for 2021. "The selection of two independent colors highlight how different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting, conveying the idea that it's not about one color or one person, it's about more than one," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in a press release. "The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude."
This warm and zoy, yet spicy and earthy colors can be incorporated into modern boho, mid-century modern and outdoor living spaces. This beautiful color is the definition of tranquil, the blue-green shades combined with gray undertones are the perfect combination of relaxing and modern. Hannah Yeo, color marketing and development manager at Benjamin Moore, calls it "an intriguing blue-green that creates natural harmony and invites us to take a moment to reflect and reset."
This pastel tone has gained popularity over the past year. Combining the pastel green with gray has created a neutral color that pairs beautifully with wood giving you a sense of serenity. The calming effect can be achieved with a more saturated sage as well, veering away from the heavy pastel. Consider using this approach on a single wall as an accent color.
When mixed with blue, this shade of green takes on a very rich color creating an elegant feel. This deep hue of green is working its way into living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens resulting in beautiful, well-curated spaces.
The color rust orange and pumpkin, are another option to decorate this year. These sages of orange combined with deep blues, brown, wine and earthy colors are beautiful and warm. Orange and dark blue can give rooms of your home a subtle and tasteful color that will welcome guests from the moment they enter.
Adding a wallpaper or board and batten can be an easy way to transform any room into a well designed, more comfortable space. We typically see this trend utilized as an accent wall to add visual contrast and personality. Wallpaper is commonly seen in geometric shapes or bright floral patterns where board and batten typically take on whites, creams, grays and new trendy colors like Urbane Bronze.
Spending more time outside over the past year has inspired many to bring earthy tones inside of their homes in the form of sustainable fabrics and textures. Earthy color palettes and warm natural textures pair beautifully with wooden, woven, and rattan home accessories. Organic materials and textiles that demonstrate their origin are becoming a popular purchase giving homeowners something to feel good about and a topic of conversation with guests. Textures with various imperfections or flaws are in fashion.
If there is one thing we excelled at in 2020, it was thorough home cleaning which is what brings us to this trend. Both homeowners and designers are seeing an uptick in easy to clean materials as a way to slow or stop the spread of germs indoors. There may be more popularity building with non-porous surfaces like metal or glass due to the lower capacity for bacterial growth. Fabrics, rugs, and soft surfaces that are stain-resistant and can be put into the washing machine are more convenient, cleanly, and will create a safe environment for your family.
