3 Front Porch Decor Tips by Carolyn from Establish Design Studio

3 Front Porch Decor Tips by Carolyn from Establish Design Studio

October 15, 2022

We are excited to collaborate with Professional Interior Designer, Carolyn Cutler, from Establish Design Studio for holiday decor this year! She's an extremely talented interior designer who's been working in the industry for quite some time now and has had her design firm for over five years. As a Utah local, we were happy to get the chance to work with her on decorating our Sunrise Ranch model home for the holidays. Because of her love for the holidays, she not only has her regular interior design clients but also clients for whom she decorates their homes for, for the holidays, from Halloween to Christmas. Go visit her on Instagram @establishdesignstudio to check out more of her designs!

We had her decorate the front porch of our Sunrise Ranch model to get us started for fall and it turned out better than we could've expected as she incorporated textures, colors, and items in a beautiful way. See the video REEL below to hear the 3 design tips she has for decorating your own front porch for fall and follow along, as we'll be sharing them in this post.

Design Tip #1 - Use Your Stairs

"Using your stairs can often give you dimension and really cool shape when you're adding decorations." - Carolyn

As you can see in the photos and video below, Carolyn utilized the unique shaping of our Sunrise Ranch model homes stairs instead of adding fall decor right near the door, where it could've been easily overlooked. Bringing your fall decor to each step on the sides will not only welcome guests to the front porch but add visual dimension to the front of your home that'll look appealing. This means finding multiple items of the same piece to add to each and every step, such as pumpkins, baskets, lanterns, and flowers.

Design Tip #2 - Use Burlap Instead of Expensive Pots

"This can actually help as a barrier for your water and keep your plants healthy and alive." - Carolyn

This is an often forgotten piece of advice for many when considering adding plants to your front porch for fall. Save a bit of money by opting for burlap in place of expensive pots. The texture and shape of the burlap complement the flowers and add more of a fall aesthetic to the porch steps. It also helps the plants stay healthy longer as it retains water better. Use a tie to wrap around the plastic pot the plant comes in to finish off the look.

Design Tip #3 - Use Everyday Items

"Use everyday items to add some spice to your porch. Mason jars or lanterns add great lighting." - Carolyn

This is a wise idea when decorating your front porch for any season! Use everyday items that you have extras of to spice up your front porch without spending an extra dime. This is not only a more affordable option, but a genius one. Grab those additional mason jars you may have hidden in your storage closet or create a quick DIY with other items in your home to form decorations for outside. Add battery-operated candles to the mason jar to feature lighting on your steps.
