Spring Cleaning Series: 4 Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Kitchen

April 12, 2022

It's that time of year again, the time you go through every inch of your home, even your garage to donate, get rid of, and organize everything you own. Welcome to spring cleaning season! We're helping you simplify the process so that it's not overwhelming by providing a few cleaning tips for the main rooms of your home, from your kitchen to your bedroom and bathroom, in our spring cleaning series. Whether you decide to focus on one room each week or tackle it all in a day, consider these spring cleaning tips for getting your home to look exceptionally clean and organized.

Starting with the kitchen, part of the main living space of your home if you have an open concept floor plan. Once you address your kitchen, you'll see a huge difference in how it impacts the appearance of your overall home. You'll definitely feel a sense of relief after cleaning and organizing your own kitchen, as afterward you'll notice how much more functional it is knowing where everything is without having to dig through drawers or push away items in your pantry to grab what you need. Start where you'd like in your kitchen and take the time you need as long as you find what works best for you.

1 Go Through Drawers

Take it from @later_kates video on how to clean out and reorganize your kitchen cabinets to get the job done. She shows you the few steps that you should take in order to get it accomplished. We suggest that if you use bleach, make sure it is safe to use on your cabinets, otherwise use a more gentle solution like half water and half dish soap. Another step we'd like to add is to get rid of items you haven't used in over a year as that will reduce clutter in your kitchen. We'd also like to mention how you should organize in a way that is most functional for how you cook and eat in your kitchen. For example, you're going to want to place your oven mitts near your oven and your utensils in close proximity to your plates and cups for convenience.

2 Reorganize Pantry

We'd suggest visiting this article from HGTV to help reorganize your pantry: Five Easy Steps to Reorganize Your Pantry. It's easiest to follow a step-by-step process to help you stay on track. If creating a written checklist of what needs to be done in your pantry helps you, do that. Whatever works best for you. We find that the step-by-step ideas help us to effectively clear out a pantry. If all else fails, remember three things: 1, remove all items out of the pantry, 2, throw away expired items, 3, reorganize in pantry where you will find certain items more easily. For example, if you're a huge cereal eater, conveniently placing them on the shelf at eye level will save a bit of time in the morning for you rather than pushing away other items in front of them if you place them above, below, or behind.

3 Wipe Down Appliances

Our appliances seem to get neglected when spring cleaning happens because we're generally focused on the removable items and perishables that are in the kitchen, but we use our appliances daily and should definitely remember to clean them. The more we maintain our appliances, the longer they generally should last. Consider cleaning one appliance at a time or you may become a bit overwhelmed, as the fridge may take the longest and the stove will take extra scrubbing. If you're a visual learner, we recommend watching this YouTube video by Home Depot on how to clean your kitchen appliances. As a rule of thumb, use gentle cleaners on your appliances such as the classic dish soap and water mixture with a scrubber meant for appliances.

If you would rather take half a day to a full day, such as a Saturday or Sunday to clean your entire kitchen, go for it! This last cleaning tip applies to you no matter what, as you'll need to examine the entire kitchen from top to bottom and make sure you've covered the main areas, then move on to the others. Once you've addressed your main areas such as sink, appliances, drawers, and cabinets, consider approaching the walls and floor for a deep clean. Wipe the walls with a towel containing a bit of soap and water to get off smudgy fingerprints or splattered pasta that may have made its way across the room. Then, make it to the floor and use a floor cleaner you already own or soap and water to scrub the floor. This may require you to go on your hands and knees to get every corner of your kitchen floor clean unless you have a microfiber mop.
